Overview
Mashariki means east. This is the same southern circuit as Kilimanjaro Safari 6 but run the other way round, which changes the shape of the trip more than you might expect.
You start in the biggest, emptiest country — Tsavo East — while you are freshest, and you finish with Amboseli's mountain and elephants, which is the image most people want to carry home. It also puts the shortest drive on the last day.

Day 1
Nairobi to Tsavo East
South-east on the Mombasa highway, entering through Manyani or Voi gate by mid-afternoon. A first game drive towards the Aruba plains before dark.

Day 2
Full day in Tsavo East
The Galana river, Lugard Falls and the Yatta plateau. Red elephants at the waterholes, and the long open views that make this park feel different from anywhere else in Kenya.

Day 3
Tsavo East to Tsavo West
Across the highway into hillier, greener country. Afternoon at Mzima Springs with its underwater viewing chamber, and the Rhino Sanctuary if time allows.

Day 4
Full day in Tsavo West
The Shetani lava flow, the Chaimu crater and the Ngulia hills. This is leopard country, though they are rarely easy. Kilimanjaro is often visible to the west.

Day 5
Tsavo West to Amboseli
West through Kimana to Amboseli, arriving for lunch. An afternoon drive on the swamps, where the herds gather in numbers you will not have seen in Tsavo.

Day 6
Sunrise, then Nairobi
An early drive for the mountain, breakfast, and the four-hour road north. Nairobi by early afternoon.
