Overview
Tsavo is vast — the two parks together cover an area the size of Wales — and it is the least crowded of Kenya's great wildlife areas. Tsavo West is hilly, volcanic and green; Tsavo East is flat, open and famously red, because the elephants dust themselves in its soil.
Adding Amboseli at the start gives you the mountain and the big swamp herds before you head into the lava country. This is a driving safari with real distance in it, but the roads run through good game all the way.

Day 1
Nairobi to Amboseli
South through Maasai rangeland, into the park for lunch and an afternoon drive on the swamps.

Day 2
Full day in Amboseli
Sunrise drive for the mountain, Observation Hill, and the herds moving between Enkongo Narok and Olokenya through the day.

Day 3
Amboseli to Tsavo West
East through Kimana into Tsavo West. Afternoon at Mzima Springs, where fifty million litres a day surface from beneath the lava — and an underwater hide puts you level with the hippos.

Day 4
Tsavo West to Tsavo East
A morning drive past the Shetani lava flow and the Chaimu crater, then across the Mombasa highway into Tsavo East. The landscape changes completely within an hour.

Day 5
Full day in Tsavo East
The Aruba dam, the Galana river and the Yatta plateau — the longest lava flow in the world. Red elephant, lion, and very open country for spotting.

Day 6
Tsavo East to Nairobi
A last drive towards the gate, then the Mombasa highway north. We reach Nairobi in the late afternoon.
