Lodges and tented camps

Most safari websites describe accommodation as 'standard', 'superior' or 'deluxe' and leave you to guess. We would rather show you the actual list, so here it is: every lodge and camp we book, grouped by park and by price level, each one linked to its own site.

The three levels are about comfort and location rather than quality of welcome. Economy properties are clean, well-run and often just outside the park gate. Comfort properties are inside the park with reliable hot water and good food. Luxury properties are inside the park in the best positions, with the space and the service to match.

Things worth knowing before you choose

• A tented camp is not camping. Canvas walls, but a proper bed, an en-suite bathroom and a concrete or timber floor.
• Inside the park means a shorter drive to the morning game drive — often forty-five minutes saved at each end of the day.
• Full board is included on every multi-day programme. Drinks are not.
• Single rooms carry a supplement almost everywhere. Tell us early if you are travelling alone so we price it properly.
• Wi-fi exists in most lodges and works in some of them. Plan on being offline in the Mara and Samburu.
