Overview
Magharibi means west, and this route earns the name in its second half. But it starts by going north, into the semi-arid country beyond Mount Kenya where a completely different set of animals lives.
The Samburu Special Five — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich — occur nowhere in the southern parks. Add Ol Pejeta's rhino and chimpanzees, then the Mara's predators, and you have the widest species list of any programme we run.

Day 1
Nairobi to Samburu
North through the central highlands — coffee, tea and pineapple country — past Mount Kenya and across the equator. Into the reserve for an afternoon drive.

Day 2
Full day in Samburu
The Ewaso Nyiro river holds everything together here. Elephant come down to dig for water in the sand, and the Special Five are all findable in a day's driving.

Day 3
Samburu to Ol Pejeta
South to the Laikipia plateau. Afternoon game drive on the conservancy, with Mount Kenya on the eastern skyline.

Day 4
Full day at Ol Pejeta
One of the densest black rhino populations in East Africa, plus the Sweetwaters chimpanzee sanctuary — the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees.

Day 5
Ol Pejeta to Lake Naivasha
South-west down the valley to Naivasha. Afternoon boat safari among hippo and fish eagles.

Day 6
Crescent Island, then the Mara
A morning walking safari, then west through Narok. Arrive in the Mara for a late-afternoon game drive.

Day 7
Full day in the Mara
Dawn to dusk with a picnic lunch. The river, the marsh and whatever the morning's radio traffic points at.

Day 8
Second full day in the Mara
A different part of the reserve. Cheetah on the Talek plains, leopard in the riverine forest, crossings in season.

Mara to Nairobi
A morning drive, breakfast, and the road east. Nairobi by late afternoon.
