Overview
The Chyulu Hills are among the youngest mountains on earth — volcanic, grass-covered and green in a landscape that is mostly not. Hemingway called this country the Green Hills of Africa, and the name has stuck.
Nine days lets you take the southern circuit slowly: three nights split between Amboseli and the hills, then Tsavo West and Tsavo East with two nights each. No day on this itinerary is mostly driving.

Day 1
Nairobi to Amboseli
South through Maasai rangeland, into the park by early afternoon and out on the swamps before dusk.

Day 2
Full day in Amboseli
Sunrise for the mountain, Observation Hill, the dry lake bed, and the herds moving between the swamps.

Day 3
Second day in Amboseli
A second full day, which is what makes this programme different from the six-day version. Optional Maasai manyatta visit in the afternoon.

Day 4
Amboseli to the Chyulu Hills
East into the hills. Green rolling grassland, lava tubes underfoot and Kilimanjaro standing behind you when you turn round.

Day 5
Chyulu Hills to Tsavo West
Down into Tsavo West through the Shetani lava flow. Afternoon at Mzima Springs and the Rhino Sanctuary.

Day 6
Full day in Tsavo West
The Ngulia hills, Chaimu crater and the Roaring Rocks viewpoint. Good leopard country, and the best long views in either Tsavo park.

Day 7
Tsavo West to Tsavo East
Across the highway into flat red country. Afternoon drive towards the Aruba plains and the waterholes.

Day 8
Full day in Tsavo East
Lugard Falls on the Galana, the Yatta plateau, and red elephants coming down to drink through the afternoon.

Day 9
Tsavo East to Nairobi
A morning drive, then north on the Mombasa highway. Nairobi in the late afternoon.
