Overview
Meru is the park where George and Joy Adamson released Elsa the lioness, and it remains one of the least-visited major parks in Kenya. Thirteen rivers cross it, which makes it green and thickly wooded in a way the northern reserves are not.
From there the route runs through Samburu's semi-arid country, onto the Laikipia plateau at Ol Pejeta, down the Rift Valley through Nakuru and Naivasha, and finishes with two full days in the Mara. Twelve days, six distinct regions, and almost no repetition.

Day 1
Nairobi to Meru National Park
North-east around the shoulder of Mount Kenya, through Embu and Meru town. Into the park for an afternoon drive along the Rojewero river.

Day 2
Full day in Meru
Doum palms along thirteen rivers, reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra and the rhino sanctuary. Elsa's grave is here, and the park is quiet enough that you may not see another vehicle.

Day 3
Meru to Samburu
North-west through Isiolo into Samburu. Afternoon drive along the Ewaso Nyiro river.

Day 4
Full day in Samburu
Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich — the Special Five, none of which live in the southern parks.

Day 5
Samburu to Ol Pejeta
South onto the Laikipia plateau, crossing the equator. Afternoon game drive with Mount Kenya behind you.

Day 6
Full day at Ol Pejeta
Black rhino at one of the highest densities in East Africa, plus the Sweetwaters chimpanzee sanctuary.

Day 7
Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru
West and down into the Rift Valley. Afternoon game drive: rhino sanctuary, Rothschild's giraffe, Baboon Cliff.

Day 8
Nakuru to Lake Naivasha
A morning drive, then the short hop south. Afternoon boat safari among hippo and fish eagles.

Day 9
Crescent Island, then the Mara
A morning walking safari on the island, then west through Narok. Evening game drive on arrival.

Days 10–11
Two full days in the Mara
The river and the marsh on one day, the open Talek plains on the other, each with a picnic lunch. Crossings in season, balloon flight optional at dawn.

Mara to Nairobi
A last drive, breakfast, and the road east through Narok. Nairobi by late afternoon, at your hotel or the airport.
