Overview
The difference between three days and four in the Mara is the difference between seeing a lion and watching a pride. With two full days inside the reserve you can follow a cheetah through a hunt, wait out a leopard in a fig tree, or spend a morning at a crossing point without worrying about the drive home.
This is the programme we book most often, and the one we would choose ourselves if the Mara were the only park on the itinerary.
Day by day

Day 1
Nairobi to the Mara
Morning departure west through Narok, arriving at camp for a late lunch. An evening game drive takes you out onto the plains for the last two hours of light.

Day 2
The river and the marsh
A full day with a picnic lunch. We head for the Mara River and the Musiara marsh — hippo, crocodile, and the lion prides that hold this ground. In season we position early at the crossing points and wait.

Day 3
Big cats on the Talek plains
A second full day, worked differently. The open Talek country is cheetah ground, and the riverine forest holds leopard. Your guide will follow whatever the morning radio traffic suggests. Optional balloon flight at dawn if you have booked one.

Day 4
Return to Nairobi
A short early drive if you want one, then breakfast and the road east. Lunch at Narok and into Nairobi mid-to-late afternoon.
