Overview
The two-day version of this safari works. The three-day version is better, and the reason is simple: you get two chances at the mountain instead of one, and two chances at the dawn light on the swamps.
Amboseli's elephant families have been studied continuously since 1972, which makes them among the best-known wild elephants anywhere. Your guide can often tell you which family group you are watching.
Day by day

Day 1
Nairobi to Amboseli
South on the Mombasa highway, west at Emali, and into the park by early afternoon. Lunch at the lodge, then an afternoon drive along the swamp edges as the herds come down to drink. Dinner and overnight in the park.

Day 2
Full day in Amboseli
A sunrise drive for the mountain, back for breakfast, then out again in the afternoon. We cover Lake Amboseli's dry pan, the acacia woodland at Ol Tukai and Observation Hill. If you want the Maasai village visit, today is when it fits.

Day 3
Last light on the mountain, then home
A final early drive, breakfast, and the four-hour road north. We reach Nairobi in the early afternoon — comfortable for an evening international departure.
