Overview
Hell's Gate is one of very few Kenyan parks where you are allowed out of the vehicle. There are no elephant and no lion resident, so you can cycle the valley floor among zebra, giraffe, buffalo and eland, then descend into Ol Njorowa gorge on foot.
The red cliffs and steam vents here were the reference for the landscape in The Lion King. We pair it with an afternoon at Lake Naivasha so the day has both effort and ease in it.

Nairobi to the Rift Valley
An early departure and a two-hour drive northwest. We stop at the escarpment viewpoint above Mai Mahiu, where the valley floor drops away and you can see Mount Longonot.

Cycling through Hell's Gate
Bicycles at Elsa Gate, then roughly eight kilometres of flat track to the gorge. Zebra, Thomson's gazelle, warthog and giraffe graze either side of you, entirely used to cyclists.

Ol Njorowa gorge on foot
A ranger takes you down into the gorge. Narrow red walls, hot springs seeping through the rock, and a scramble or two. Roughly ninety minutes; sturdy shoes matter more than fitness.

Lake Naivasha
Lunch at a lakeside lodge, with time to watch fish eagles work the shallows. An optional boat safari can be added here if you want an hour among the hippos.

Return to Nairobi
Back up the escarpment and into the city, usually by early evening depending on traffic through Naivasha town and Limuru.
